Mahanadi River in Madhya Pradesh

Mahanadi River

The Mahanadi river has its source in the highlands of the Raipur district in the Indian state of Chhattisgarh. The river proceeds through the state of Orissa to reach the Bay of Bengal. Before reaching its ultimate destination it travels a length of about 860 km. On its way, it traverses the northern plateau land, the Eastern Ghats region, the coastal plains and the central table land. The Mahanadi river delta stretches over an area of 141,589 sq. km., which counts to be almost 4.3% of the total geographical area of the country. The main tributaries that join the Mahanadi river in its onward journey are the Shivnath, the Hansdeo, the Ong, the Mand, the Jonk, the Ib, and the Tel rivers. The surrounding soil types found around the river are deltaic soil, laterite soil, red soil, yellow soil, mixed black and red soil.
